Fucking right, New York

Gay marriage is now recognized in six states (and Washington D.C.). Right now I feel like my country is 2% more reasonable than it was this time yesterday. And that ain’t nothing.

To all the New Yorkers who’ve been waiting too long for this, I wish you all possible joy! To everyone still denied the right to marry their sweethearts, we’ll get there. I really do believe it. Eventually, we’ll even get Utah.

In the meantime, last night was a good night.

So finally New York catches up to that Liberal Hippie State of …Iowa!

My co-worker came into the police department this morning to relieve me. While I finished up on a DWI report, he checked his web-based email, which popped up the news. “So,” he said with a smirk, “New York state has made it legal for gays to marry…!”

“Good. Maybe we’ll be next,” I said.

“I know, right?!?” said my conservative, VERY hetero, recently-married cop buddy.

Despite the stereotypes and the expectations of the opposition, many, many of us stand behind equality. More than the bigots know. That’s part of their downfall.

In a world of so much ugliness, cruelty and instability, when two — OR MORE — consenting adults want their union recognized as a permanent, binding relationship with all the benefits marriage affords, that is something to be celebrated. We should act to remove any impediment to marriage between loving consenting adults.

Hear, hear, to Matt on making Texas next.

I wish this country could be in the position to spend time on more important things.
